The element that shows greater ability to form multiple bonds, is:
  1. (A)Sn
  2. (B)C✓ Correct
  3. (C)Ge
  4. (D)Si

Answer: (B)

Solution

Forming multiple bonds needs small atoms whose -orbitals overlap sideways well. Carbon, the smallest of group 14, makes strong and bonds, whereas the larger silicon, germanium and tin lose this ability and prefer single bonds. Carbon therefore shows the greatest tendency.
