In an acid - base titration, 0.1 M HCl solution was added to the NaOH solution of unknown strength. Which of the following correctly shows the change of pH of the titration mixture in this experiment?
  1. (A)(a)
  2. (B)(c)
  3. (C)(d)
    ✓ Correct
  4. (D)(b)

Answer: (C)

Solution

Here a strong acid, HCl, is run into a strong base, NaOH. The flask begins strongly basic, so the pH starts high, near . As acid is added the pH eases down, then drops almost vertically through at the equivalence point, and finally levels off at a low value once excess HCl makes the mixture acidic. The curve that starts high, falls sharply through neutrality, and then flattens out low is the one that describes this titration.
