Two plane mirrors are inclined to each other such that a ray of light incident to the first mirror ( M1 ) and parallel to the second mirror ( M2 ) is finally reflected from the second mirror ( M2 ) parallel to the first mirror ( M1 ). The angle between the two mirrors will be:
(A)45∘
(B)60∘✓ Correct
(C)75∘
(D)90∘
Answer: (B)
Solution
Let the mirrors meet at angle θ. The ray enters parallel to M2, strikes M1, reflects, and must finally leave M2 parallel to M1. Tracing the ray and applying the law of reflection at each mirror, the two mirrors and the ray enclose a triangle whose three angles are each forced to equal θ by the parallelism conditions. Since the angles of a triangle sum to 180∘, 3θ=180∘, so θ=60∘.
