Which of the following conditions in drinking water causes methemoglobinemia?
  1. (A)> 50 ppm of lead
  2. (B) of chloride
  3. (C) of nitrate✓ Correct
  4. (D) of sulphate

Answer: (C)

Solution

Methaemoglobinaemia, the so-called blue-baby syndrome, is triggered when drinking water carries more than about of nitrate. Swallowed nitrate is reduced to nitrite in the gut, and nitrite oxidises the iron of haemoglobin to the form, methaemoglobin, which can no longer bind and carry oxygen.
