From a uniform circular disc of radius R and mass 9 M , a small disc of radius 3R is removed as shown in the figure. The moment of inertia of the remaining disc about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the disc and passing through centre of disc is :
(A)937MR2
(B)4MR2✓ Correct
(C)940MR2
(D)10MR2
Answer: (B)
Solution
Treat the holed disc as the full disc minus the piece removed. The full disc of mass 9M has I=21(9M)R2=29MR2 about the central axis. The removed disc of radius 3R has one ninth of the area and so mass M, and its centre sits 32R from the main axis, so by the parallel-axis theorem it accounts for 2M(3R)2+M(32R)2=18MR2+94MR2=2MR2. Subtracting, the remaining disc has 29MR2−2MR2=4MR2.
