A diverging lens with magnitude of focal length 25 cm is placed at a distance of 15 cm from a converging lens of magnitude of focal length 20 cm. A beam of parallel light falls on the diverging lens. The final image formed is :
  1. (A)real and at a distance of 40 cm from the divergent lens.
  2. (B)real and at a distance of 6 cm from the convergent lens.
  3. (C)real and at a distance of 40 cm from convergent lens.✓ Correct
  4. (D)virtual and at a distance of 40 cm from convergent lens.

Answer: (C)

Solution

Take the lenses in turn. Parallel light meeting the diverging lens ( cm) appears to spread from a point cm behind it. For the converging lens cm further on, that point is a virtual object at distance cm on the incoming side, so cm. Then , giving cm. Being positive, the final image is real and lies cm beyond the converging lens.
