The thiol group is −SH. Cysteine is the amino acid that carries it, HSCHX2CH(NHX2)COOH. Cystine is two cysteines joined through a disulfide bond, methionine holds its sulfur as a thioether −S− rather than a thiol, and cytosine is a nitrogen base with no sulfur. The thiol group is present in cysteine.
