The scheme runs through a Rosenmund reduction, in which the acyl chloride is reduced over palladium poisoned with barium sulphate so that it stops cleanly at the aldehyde. Reducing that carbonyl further with zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid, as in a Clemmensen reduction, strips the oxygen away to leave the hydrocarbon, so the final product C is ethylene.
