This question has statement 1 and statement 2. Of the four choices given after the statements, choose the one that best describes the two statements

Statement 1: Davisson - germer experiment established the wave nature of electrons.

Statement 2: If electrons have wave nature, they can interfere and show diffraction.
  1. (A)Statement 1 is false, Statement 2 is true
  2. (B)Statement 1 is true, Statement 2 is false
  3. (C)Statement 1 is true, Statement 2 is the correct explanation for statement 1✓ Correct
  4. (D)Statement 1 is true, Statement 2 is true, Statement 2 is not the correct explanation for statement 1.

Answer: (C)

Solution

The Davisson--Germer experiment scattered a beam of electrons from a nickel crystal and found intensity peaks exactly where wave interference predicts, so it did establish the wave nature of electrons; the first statement is true. The second statement is also true, and it is the reason the experiment works: only something with wave character can interfere and diffract, so observing electron diffraction is direct evidence of their wave nature. The second statement is thus the correct explanation of the first.
