Consider the following bromides:

The correct order of reactivity is
Structure A
A
Structure B
B
Structure C
C
  1. (A)B > C > A✓ Correct
  2. (B)B > A > C
  3. (C)C > B > A
  4. (D)A > B > C

Answer: (A)

Solution

rates follow the stability of the carbocation left when bromide departs. The straight-chain bromide gives a primary cation, the least stable; the allylic bromide gives a resonance-stabilised allylic cation, the most stable; and the branched bromide gives a secondary cation of intermediate stability. Ranking the cations allylic above secondary above primary gives the reactivity order among the three structures.
