If and are the accelerations due to gravity on the surfaces of the earth and the moon respectively and if Millikan's oil drop experiment could be performed on the two surfaces, one will find the ratio to be
  1. (A)1✓ Correct
  2. (B)0
  3. (C)
  4. (D)

Answer: (A)

Solution

The charge on an electron is a fundamental constant of nature; it does not depend on where the measurement is made or on the local strength of gravity. Carrying out Millikan's experiment on the Moon would therefore return the very same electronic charge as on the Earth, so the ratio of the two is exactly .
