Which of the following reactions will yield 2, 2-dibromopropane?
(A)(see structure)✓ Correct
(B)CH3CH≡CHBr+HBr⟶
(C)(see structure)
(D)CH3−CH=CH2+HBr⟶
Answer: (A)
Solution
To reach 2,2-dibromopropane, CH3CBr2CH3, both bromine atoms must settle on the central carbon of a three-carbon chain. Adding two moles of hydrogen bromide to propyne, CH3C≡CH, does exactly that: by Markovnikov's rule each HBr places its bromine on the more substituted middle carbon, first giving CH3CBr=CH2 and then the geminal dibromide. The addition of two equivalents of hydrogen bromide to propyne is thus the route that yields the compound.
