A coin is placed on a horizontal platform which undergoes vertical simple harmonic motion of angular frequency . The amplitude of oscillation is gradually increased. The coin will leave contact with the platform for the first time
  1. (A)at the highest position of the platform
  2. (B)at the mean position of the platform
  3. (C)for an amplitude of ✓ Correct
  4. (D)for an amplitude of

Answer: (C)

Solution

The platform can only push up on the coin, so the largest downward acceleration it can impart while they stay in contact is , reached when the normal force just falls to zero. In vertical simple harmonic motion the peak acceleration is , directed downward at the top of the swing. Contact is first lost when , that is for an amplitude , and it happens at the highest point of the motion.
