Solution

The fish sees the outside world through the cone bounded by the critical angle, where

sin θ_{c} = \frac{1}{μ} = \frac{3}{4}

. Then

cos θ_{c} = 1 - \frac{9}{16} = \frac{7}{4}

and

tan θ_{c} = \frac{3}{7}

. The radius of the bright circle at depth

h = 12

cm is

r = h tan θ_{c} = 12 \times \frac{3}{7} = \frac{36}{7}

cm.
