The bob of a simple pendulum is a spherical hollow ball filled with water. A plugged hole near the bottom of the oscillation bob gets suddenly unplugged. During observation, till water is coming out, the time period of oscillation would
- (A)first increase and then decrease to the original value.✓ Correct
- (B)first decreased then increase to the original value.
- (C)remain unchanged.
- (D)increase towards a saturation value.
Answer: (A)
Solution
The period depends on the distance from the pivot to the centre of mass of the bob. As water drains from the bottom, the centre of mass of what remains sinks, lengthening the effective pendulum and so lengthening the period. Once the bob is empty, the centre of mass is back at the centre of the sphere, so the period returns to its original value; it first increases and then falls back.
