Statement-I : The structure of Maltose is given below :

(structure shown)

Statement-II : The structure of Lactose is given below

(structure shown)

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. (C)Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. (D)Statement I is false but Statement II is true✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Maltose is two glucose units joined by an glycosidic linkage, leaving the anomeric carbon of the second glucose as a free hemiacetal, so maltose is a reducing sugar. The structure in Statement I is labelled a non-reducing sugar, which is wrong, so Statement I is false. Lactose is galactose joined to glucose by a linkage with a free hemiacetal on the glucose unit, so it is a reducing sugar, exactly as drawn in Statement II, so Statement II is true. Hence Statement I is false while Statement II is true.
