Three masses m1=4 kg, m2=4 kg and m3=6 kg are suspended from a fixed smooth frictionless pully as shown in the figure below. The value of T1/T2 is ______. (take g=10 m/s2)
(A)35✓ Correct
(B)32
(C)53
(D)52
Answer: (A)
Solution
Let a be the common acceleration, with the heavier right side moving down. The 4 kg mass m1 on the left rises: T1−m1g=m1a, i.e. T1−40=4a. On the right the over-pulley string T1 holds m2, and m2 carries m3 below it through the lower string T2. For m3: m3g−T2=m3a, i.e. 60−T2=6a. For m2 (moving down): m2g+T2−T1=m2a, i.e. 40+T2−T1=4a. Adding the three equations, 60=14a, so a=730m/s2. Then T1=40+4a=7400N and T2=60−6a=7240N, giving T2T1=240400=35.
