Two wires as shown in the figure below, made of steel and have breaking stress of 12×108 N/m2. Area of cross-section of upper wire is 0.008 cm2 and of lower wire is 0.004 cm2. The maximum mass that can be added to pan without breaking any wire is ______ kg. (take g=10 m/s2)
(A)56
(B)38✓ Correct
(C)96
(D)5.6
Answer: (B)
Solution
A wire breaks when its tensile stress reaches 12×108N/m2. From the figure the upper wire (A=0.008cm2=8×10−7m2) carries the 30 kg block, the 10 kg block, the pan and the added mass m, a total of (40+m) kg, while the lower wire (A=0.004cm2=4×10−7m2) carries only the 10 kg block, the pan and m, i.e. (10+m) kg. For the upper wire, 8×10−7(40+m)×10=12×108 gives 40+m=96, so m=56 kg. For the lower wire, 4×10−7(10+m)×10=12×108 gives 10+m=48, so m=38 kg. The wire reaching its breaking stress first fixes the limit, so the maximum mass that can be added to the pan is 38 kg.
