(B)118✓ Correct
(C)160
(D)125
Answer: (B)
Solution
Styrene first undergoes electrophilic addition of bromine to give (1,2-dibromoethyl)benzene, C6H5CHBr−CH2Br. Excess sodamide eliminates two molecules of HBr to form phenylacetylene and then deprotonates the terminal alkyne to its acetylide, C6H5C≡C−. Alkylation with CH3I gives 1-phenylpropyne, C6H5C≡C−CH3. Dissolving-metal reduction with sodium in liquid ammonia converts the internal alkyne to the trans alkene, C6H5CH=CH−CH3 (1-phenylpropene, C9H10). Its molar mass is 9(12)+10(1)=118gmol−1.
