Which of the following statement(s) is/are true ?
(A) If two orbitals have the same value of ( ), the orbital with lower value of will have lower energy.
(B) Energies of the orbitals in the same subshell increase with increase in atomic number.
(C) The size of orbital is less than the size of orbital.
(D) Among 5f,6s, 4d, 5p and 5d orbitals, none of the orbitals have 2 radial nodes.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
(A) If two orbitals have the same value of ( ), the orbital with lower value of will have lower energy.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- (A)A, B and C only
- (B)A and C only✓ Correct
- (C)C and D only
- (D)A only
Answer: (B)
Solution
By the rule, when two orbitals share the same value the one with the smaller is lower in energy, so statement (A) is correct. For a given subshell the orbital energy becomes more negative, i.e. decreases, as atomic number rises because of the greater nuclear charge, so statement (B) is incorrect. Orbital size increases with the principal quantum number, hence is smaller than and statement (C) is correct. The number of radial nodes is , which for a orbital is , so a orbital does possess two radial nodes and statement (D) is incorrect. The true statements are A and C only.
