An object AB is placed 15 cm on the left of a convex lens P of focal length 10 cm. Another convex lens Q is now placed 15 cm right of lens P. If the focal length of lens Q is 15 cm, the final image is ______
(A)virtual, formed at 7.5 cm right of lens Q, with a size bigger than that of AB
(B)real, formed at 7.5 cm right of lens Q, with a size same than that of AB✓ Correct
(C)formed at infinity.
(D)real, formed at 7 cm right of lens Q, with a size smaller than that of AB
Answer: (B)
Solution
For the first lens, fP=10cm with u=−15cm: v1=fP1+u1=101−151=301, so v=30cm to the right of P. This image lies 30−15=15cm beyond lens Q and so is a virtual object for Q with u′=+15cm. For Q, fQ=15cm: v′1=fQ1+u′1=151+151=152, so v′=7.5cm to the right of Q, and being positive the image is real. The overall magnification is m=(uv)(u′v′)=(−1530)(157.5)=−1, so the image is the same size as the object. The final image is real, formed 7.5cm to the right of lens Q, with the same size as AB.
