Let chord PQ of length 313 of the parabola y2=12x be such that the ordinates of points P and Q are in the ratio 1:2. If the chord PQ subtends an angle α at the focus of the parabola, then sinα is equal to:
(A)53✓ Correct
(B)54
(C)135
(D)1312
Answer: (A)
Solution
Points on y2=12x have the form (3t2,6t). Taking P=(3t2,6t) and Q=(3s2,6s) with ordinates in ratio 1:2 gives s=2t, so Q=(12t2,12t). Then PQ=(9t2)2+(6t)2=3t9t2+4, and PQ=313 gives 9t4+4t2−13=0, i.e. (t2−1)(9t2+13)=0, so t=1. Hence P=(3,6), Q=(12,12) and the focus is S=(3,0). The segment SP is vertical and SQ has slope 12−312=34, so the angle α between them satisfies tanα=34, giving sinα=53.
