Let the point A be the foot of perpendicular drawn from the point P(a,b,0) on the line 2x−1=1y−2=3z−α. If the midpoint of the line segment PA is (0,43,4−1), then the value of a2+b2+α2 is equal to :
(A)1✓ Correct
(B)2
(C)6
(D)9
Answer: (A)
Solution
A general point of the line is A=(1+2t,2+t,α+3t). Equating the midpoint of PA to (0,43,−41) gives a=−1−2t,b=−21−t,α=−21−3t. The vector PA=(2+4t,25+2t,α+3t) must be perpendicular to the direction (2,1,3):
2(2+4t)+(25+2t)+3(α+3t)=0.
Substituting α=−21−3t gives 10t+5=0, so t=−21, and then a=0,b=0,α=1. Therefore a2+b2+α2=1.
