A normal with slope 61 is drawn from the point (0,−α) to the parabola x2=−4ay, where a>0. Let L be the line passing through (0,−α) and parallel to the directrix of the parabola. Suppose that L intersects the parabola at two points A and B. Let r denote the length of the latus rectum and s denote the square of the length of the line segment AB. If r:s=1:16, then the value of 24a is ____.
Answer: 12
Solution
For the parabola x2=−4ay, a point on it is (2at,−at2) and the slope of the normal is t.
Given the normal has slope 61, so t=6.
The normal passes through (0,−α):
2at−at2+α=t1
−at2+α=2a
α=2a+at2=2a+6a=8a
The line L is y=−8a. Substituting into the parabola:
x2=−4a(−8a)=32a2⇒x=±42a
So A=(−42a,−8a) and B=(42a,−8a).
Length of AB: ∣AB∣=82a, so s=(82a)2=128a2.
Length of latus rectum: r=4a.
Given sr=161:
128a24a=161⇒32a1=161⇒a=21
Therefore: 24a=12
