A charge is kept at the central point P of a cylindrical region. The two edges subtend a half-angle θ at P, as shown in the figure. When θ=30∘, then the electric flux through the curved surface of the cylinder is Φ. If θ=60∘, then the electric flux through the curved surface becomes Φ/n, where the value of n is ____.
Answer: 3
Solution
The solid angle subtended by the two plane surfaces (top and bottom) is:
Ωplanes=2×2π(1−cosθ)=4π(1−cosθ)
The solid angle subtended by the curved surface is:
Ωcurved=4π−Ωplanes=4πcosθ
The flux through the curved surface is:
ϕ=4πΩcurved⋅ε0Q=cosθ⋅ε0Q
For θ=30°:
ϕ30=cos30°⋅ε0Q=23⋅ε0Q=Φ
For θ=60°:
ϕ60=cos60°⋅ε0Q=21⋅ε0Q
The ratio:
ϕ60ϕ30=cos60°cos30°=1/23/2=3
Therefore: ϕ60=3Φ, so n=3.
