In Circuit-1 and Circuit-2 shown in the figures, R1=1Ω,R2=2Ω and R3=3Ω. P1 and P2 are the power dissipations in Circuit-1 and Circuit-2 when the switches S1 and S2 are in open conditions, respectively. Q1 and Q2 are the power dissipations in Circuit-1 and Circuit-2 when the switches S1 and S2 are in closed conditions, respectively.
Which of the following statement(s) is(are) correct?Circuit-1Circuit-2
(A)When a voltage source of 6V is connected across A and B in both circuits, P1<P2.✓ Correct
(B)When a constant current source of 2 Amp is connected across A and B in both circuits, P1>P2.✓ Correct
(C)When a voltage source of 6V is connected across A and B in Circuit-1, Q1>P1.✓ Correct
(D)When a constant current source of 2Amp is connected across A and B in both circuits, Q2<Q1
Answer: (A), (B), (C)
Solution
With the switches open the equivalent resistances are RC1=1116Ω and RC2=116Ω. For a voltage source P=V2/R, so the larger resistance of Circuit-1 dissipates less and P1<P2. For a constant-current source P=I2R, so the larger resistance dissipates more and P1>P2. With the switches closed the resistances drop to RC1′=115Ω and RC2′=21Ω; for a 6 V source across Circuit-1 the smaller resistance raises the dissipation, so Q1>P1. For a 2 A source Q1=I2RC1′=4×115=1120≈1.82 W while Q2=4×21=2 W, so Q2>Q1 and the statement Q2<Q1 fails.
