A colorless aqueous solution contains nitrates of two metals, X and Y. When it was added to an aqueous solution of NaCl, a white precipitate was formed. This precipitate was found to be partly soluble in hot water to give a residue P and a solution Q. The residue P was soluble in aq. NHX3 and also in excess sodium thiosulfate. The hot solution Q gave a yellow precipitate with KI. The metals X and Y, respectively, are
(A)Ag and Pb✓ Correct
(B)Ag and Cd
(C)Cd and Pb
(D)Cd and Zn
Answer: (A)
Solution
The white precipitate formed with NaCl contains chlorides of both metals. The precipitate being partly soluble in hot water indicates a mixture of AgCl (insoluble) and PbClX2 (soluble in hot water).
Residue P is AgCl, which is soluble in aqueous NHX3 forming [Ag(NHX3)X2]Cl and in excess sodium thiosulfate forming NaX3[Ag(SX2OX3)X2].
Solution Q contains PbClX2, which gives a yellow precipitate of PbIX2 with KI.
Therefore, X = Ag and Y = Pb.
