Let F1(x1,0) and F2(x2,0), for x1<0 and x2>0, be the foci of the ellipse 9x2+8y2=1. Suppose a parabola having vertex at the origin and focus at F2 intersects the ellipse at point M in the first quadrant and at point N in the fourth quadrant.
The orthocentre of the triangle F1MN is
(A)(−109,0)✓ Correct
(B)(32,0)
(C)(109,0)
(D)(32,6)
Answer: (A)
Solution
For the ellipse 9x2+8y2=1, we have a2=9,b2=8, so c=1 and foci are F1(−1,0) and F2(1,0). The parabola with vertex at origin and focus at F2(1,0) is y2=4x. Solving with the ellipse: 9x2+84x=1 gives x=23, so M=(23,6) and N=(23,−6). Since MN is vertical, one altitude is the x-axis (y=0). The other altitude from M perpendicular to F1N has slope 265. The equation is (y−6)=265(x−23). Setting y=0: x=−109. Thus the orthocentre is (−109,0).
