A Young's double slit interference arrangement with slits S1 and S2 is immersed in water (refractive index =4/3) as shown in the figure. The positions of maxima on the surface of water are given by x2=p2m2λ2−d2, where λ is the wavelength of light in air (refractive index =1), 2d is the separation between the slits and m is an integer. The value of p is
Answer: 3
Solution
For constructive interference, the path difference must equal mλ (wavelength in air). In water with refractive index μ=4/3, the optical path difference is Δ=μ(d2+x2−d2+x2). Wait, both slits are in water, so the path difference in water is d2+x2−d2+x2 for paths from the two slits. Actually, from the geometry and the condition for maxima: 34d2+x2−d2+x2=mλ, giving 31d2+x2=mλ. Squaring: 91(d2+x2)=m2λ2, so x2=9m2λ2−d2. Therefore p=3.
