A spherical portion has been removed from a solid sphere having a charge distributed uniformly in its volume as shown in the figure. The electric field inside the emptied space is
(A)zero everywhere
(B)non-zero and uniform✓ Correct
(C)non-uniform
(D)zero only at its center
Answer: (B)
Solution
Using the principle of superposition, we can treat the cavity as:
A uniformly charged solid sphere (positive charge)
Plus a uniformly charged sphere of opposite charge density at the cavity location
The electric field due to a uniformly charged sphere at an internal point is E=3ϵ0ρr (proportional to position vector from center).
For the cavity:
Field due to complete sphere at point P: E1=3ϵ0ρr1 (from main sphere center)
Field due to removed sphere: E2=−3ϵ0ρr2 (from cavity center)
Net field: E=E1+E2=3ϵ0ρ(r1−r2)=3ϵ0ρd
where d is the constant vector from cavity center to main sphere center.
Therefore, the field is non-zero and uniform throughout the cavity.
