There is a rectangular plate of mass M kg of dimensions . The plate is held in horizontal position by striking n small balls each of mass m per unit area per unit time. These are striking in the shaded half region of the plate. The balls are colliding elastically with velocity v. What is v? It is given kg, kg; m; m; m/s.

Answer: 10

Solution

Taking torque about the hinge side (one edge of the plate):

The balls strike the shaded half region (area ) with n balls per unit area per unit time. Each ball undergoes elastic collision, so the momentum change per ball is .

The force from the balls acts at the center of the shaded region, which is at distance from the hinge.

Torque due to balls:

Torque due to weight of plate:

For equilibrium:

Simplifying:

m/s

Answer: 10 m/s
