The methoxy group is a strong activator and an ortho/para director. Nitration of anisole (HNO3/H2SO4) gives predominantly the para product, p-nitroanisole (A). Brominating A with excess Br2/Fe then substitutes at positions activated by −OCH3 (its ortho/para positions) rather than by the deactivating, meta-directing −NO2 group, giving the dibromo product B with both bromines placed ortho to the methoxy group.
