Two long parallel wires X and Y , separated by a distance of 6 cm , carry currents of 5 A and 4 A , respectively, in opposite directions as shown in the figure. Magnitude of the resultant magnetic field at point P at a distance of 4 cm from wire Y is x×10−5T. The value of x is ______. Take permeability of free space as μ0=4π×10−7 SI units.
Answer: 1
Solution
Wire X carries 5 A and wire Y carries 4 A, in opposite directions, separated by 6 cm. Point P lies 4 cm from Y on the side away from X, so P is 6+4=10 cm from X.
The magnetic field of a long straight wire at perpendicular distance r is B=2πrμ0I.
Field due to X at P (10 cm = 0.10 m): BX=2π(0.10)μ0(5)=π25μ0
Field due to Y at P (4 cm = 0.04 m): BY=2π(0.04)μ0(4)=π50μ0
Since the currents in X and Y are anti-parallel and P lies beyond Y (outside both wires), by the right-hand rule the two fields at P point in opposite senses, so the resultant is their difference: B=BY−BX=π50μ0−π25μ0=π25μ0
Substituting μ0=4π×10−7: B=π25×4π×10−7=100×10−7=1×10−5 T
So x = 1.
