A solid sphere of mass ' m ' and radius ' r ' is allowed to roll without slipping from the highest point of an inclined plane of length 'L' and makes an angle 30∘ with the horizontal. The speed of the particle at the bottom of the plane is v1. If the angle of inclination is increased to 45∘ while keeping L constant. Then the new speed of the sphere at the bottom of the plane is v2. The ratio of v12:v22 is
(A)1:2✓ Correct
(B)1:3
(C)1:2
(D)1:3
Answer: (A)
Solution
For a solid sphere of mass m, radius r, rolling without slipping down a length L of an incline at angle θ, energy conservation gives:
mgLsinθ=21mv2+21Icmω2
With Icm=52mr2 and ω=v/r:
21mv2+21⋅52mr2⋅r2v2=107mv2
So mgLsinθ=107mv2⇒v2=710gLsinθ, i.e. v2∝sinθ for fixed L.
v22v12=sin45∘sin30∘=1/21/2=21
So v12:v22=1:2.
