Two concave refracting surfaces of equal radii of curvature and refractive index 1.5 face each other in air as shown in figure. A point object O is placed midway, between P and B . The separation between the images of O , formed by each refracting surface is :Two concave surfaces facing each other
(A)0.214 R
(B)0.114 R✓ Correct
(C)0.411 R
(D)0.124 R
Answer: (B)
Solution
Let the two concave surfaces, each of radius of curvature R and refractive index 1.5, share a common center of curvature P midway between their vertices A and B, so that AP=PB=R and AB=2R. The object O lies midway between P and B, so OP=OB=2R and OA=OP+PA=23R.
Each surface forms its own image of O directly, using the single-surface refraction formula
vμ2−uμ1=Rμ2−μ1
with light going from air (μ1=1) into glass (μ2=1.5).
For surface B, u=−2R, with the center of curvature on the incident side so R→−R:
vB1.5−−R/21=−R0.5
vB1.5=−R0.5−R2=−R2.5⟹vB=−0.6R
For surface A, u=−23R, with the same sign convention:
vA1.5−−3R/21=−R0.5
vA1.5=−R0.5−3R2=−6R7⟹vA=−79R
Both images form on the object side of their respective surfaces, at distances 0.6R from B and 79R from A, measured back into the gap between the surfaces. The separation between the two images is therefore
AB−(0.6R+79R)=2R−713.2R=70.8R≈0.114R
