Let A and B be the two points of intersection of the line y+5=0 and the mirror image of the parabola y2=4x with respect to the line x+y+4=0. If d denotes the distance between A and B , and a denotes the area of △SAB, where S is the focus of the parabola y2=4x, then the vlaue of (a+d) is
Answer: 14
Solution
Reflecting a point (x,y) in the line x+y+4=0 gives the image (−y−4,−x−4). If (X,Y) is the image of a point (x,y) on y2=4x, then x=−Y−4, y=−X−4, so
(−X−4)2=4(−Y−4)⟹(X+4)2=−4Y−16
This is the mirror-image parabola.
Setting Y=−5:
(X+4)2=20−16=4⟹X=−2 or X=−6
So A=(−2,−5), B=(−6,−5), giving d=∣AB∣=4.
The focus of y2=4x is S=(1,0). Since AB is horizontal at height y=−5, the perpendicular distance from S to line AB is 5, so
a=21×4×5=10
a+d=10+4=14.
