A thin plano convex lens made of glass of refractive index 1.5 is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.2. When the plane side of the lens is silver coated for complete reflection, the lens immersed in the liquid behaves like a concave mirror of focal length 0.2 m. The radius of curvature of the curved surface of the lens is :-
(A)0.15 m
(B)0.10 m✓ Correct
(C)0.20 m
(D)0.25 m
Answer: (B)
Solution
When the plane face of a plano-convex lens is silvered, light entering through the curved surface refracts once, reflects off the silvered plane, and refracts again through the curved surface — the system behaves as an equivalent mirror.
Refraction at the curved surface (liquid of index 1.2 to glass of index 1.5), parallel rays from infinity (u=∞): vnglass−unliquid=Rnglass−nliquid
v1.5=R1.5−1.2=R0.3⇒v=5R
This image acts as the object for the plane silvered surface, which reflects it back at the same distance; light then refracts through the curved surface a second time, now going from glass to liquid, to form the final image, giving the equivalent focal length f of the mirror system:
fnliquid−vnglass=−Rnliquid−nglass
f1.2−5R1.5=R0.3
f1.2=R0.3+R0.3=R0.6
f=0.61.2R=2R
With f=0.2 m: R=2f=0.10 m
