What amount of bromine will be required to convert 2 g of phenol into 2, 4, 6-tribromophenol? (Given molar mass in gmol−1 of C,H,O,Br are 12, 1,16,80 respectively)
(A)10.22 g✓ Correct
(B)6.0 g
(C)4.0 g
(D)20.44 g
Answer: (A)
Solution
Phenol undergoes electrophilic aromatic substitution with bromine; the strongly activating hydroxyl group directs bromination to both ortho positions and the para position, giving 2,4,6-tribromophenol: C6H5OH+3Br2→C6H2Br3OH+3HBr
Molar mass of phenol =6(12)+6(1)+16=94gmol−1.
Moles of phenol =942=0.0213mol.
Each mole of phenol consumes 3 mol of Br2, so moles of Br2 required =3×0.0213=0.0638mol.
Mass of Br2=0.0638×160=10.22g.
