Given below are two statements :

Statement (I) : In partition chromatography, stationary phase is thin film of liquid present in the inert support.
Statement (II) : In paper chromatography, the material of paper acts as a stationary phase.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. (B)Statement I is true but Statement II is false✓ Correct
  3. (C)Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. (D)Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer: (B)

Solution

In partition chromatography the stationary phase is genuinely a thin film of liquid held on an inert solid support, and separation depends on differential partitioning of the solutes between this liquid film and the mobile phase — statement I is correct. In paper chromatography, however, it is not the cellulose of the paper that acts as the stationary phase; the paper merely supports a thin layer of water trapped within its fibres, and this adsorbed water is the actual stationary phase — statement II, which credits the paper material itself, is incorrect.
