Consider the equilibrium
If the pressure applied over the system increases by two fold at constant temperature then
(A) Concentration of reactants and products increases.
(B) Equilibrium will shift in forward direction.
(C) Equilibrium constant increases since concentration of products increases.
(D) Equilibrium constant remains unchanged as concentration of reactants and products remain same.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

(C) Equilibrium constant increases since concentration of products increases.
(D) Equilibrium constant remains unchanged as concentration of reactants and products remain same.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- (A)(A) and (B) only✓ Correct
- (B)(A), (B) and (D) only
- (C)(B) and (C) only
- (D)(A), (B) and (C) only
Answer: (A)
Solution
The reaction has 4 mol of gas on the reactant side and 2 mol on the product side. Doubling the pressure at constant temperature halves the volume, so by the concentration of every species rises — statement (A) holds. By Le Chatelier's principle the system shifts toward the side with fewer gas moles to relieve the pressure increase, i.e. toward the products — statement (B) holds. The equilibrium constant is a function of temperature alone; it is untouched by a pressure change, so (C) is wrong, and the individual concentrations of reactants and products clearly do change (they all increase), so (D) is wrong too. Only (A) and (B) are correct.
