The width of one of the two slits in a Young's double slit experiment is 4 times that of the other slit. The ratio of the maximum of the minimum intensity in the interference pattern is :

Solution

Intensity from a slit is proportional to its width, so if one slit is 4 times as wide as the other,

I_{2} = 4 I_{1}

. Let

I_{1} = I

, so

I_{2} = 4 I

I_{ma x} = (I_{1} + I_{2})^{2} = (I + 2 I)^{2} = 9 I

I_{min} = (I_{2} - I_{1})^{2} = (2 I - I)^{2} = I

\frac{I _{ma x}}{I _{min}} = \frac{9 I}{I} = 9 : 1
