Given below are two statements :

Statement (I) : Kjeldahl method is applicable to estimate nitrogen in pyridine.

Statement (II) : The nitrogen present in pyridine can easily be converted into ammonium sulphate in Kjeldahl method.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II is false✓ Correct
  2. (B)Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. (C)Both Statement I and Statement II is true
  4. (D)Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Answer: (A)

Solution

Kjeldahl's method requires the sample nitrogen to be convertible to ammonium sulfate on digestion with conc. . In pyridine, the nitrogen lone pair is part of the aromatic ring system and the ring resists this conversion, so the method does not apply. Both statements are false.
