Let the vertices Q and R of the triangle PQR lie on the line 5x+3=2y−1=3z+4,QR=5 and the coordinates of the point P be (0,2,3). If the area of the triangle PQR is nm then :
(A)m−521n=0
(B)2m−521n=0✓ Correct
(C)5m−221n=0
(D)5m−212n=0
Answer: (B)
Solution
Let M be the midpoint of QR on the line. Any point on the line is (5λ−3,2λ+1,3λ−4).
The direction ratios of PM are (5λ−3,2λ−1,3λ−7).
Since PM is perpendicular to the line (direction ratios 5, 2, 3):
(5λ−3)⋅5+(2λ−1)⋅2+(3λ−7)⋅3=0
25λ−15+4λ−2+9λ−21=0
38λ=38⇒λ=1
So M = (2, 3, -1), and:
PM=(2−0)2+(3−2)2+(−1−3)2=4+1+16=21
Area of triangle PQR:
Area=21×QR×PM=21×5×21=2521
So nm=2521, giving 2m=521n, or 2m−521n=0.
