Let the focal chord PQ of the parabola y2=4x make an angle of 60∘ with the positive x -axis, where P lies in the first quadrant. If the circle, whose one diameter is PS, S being the focus of the parabola, touches the y -axis at the point (0,α), then 5α2 is equal to :
(A)15✓ Correct
(B)25
(C)30
(D)20
Answer: (A)
Solution
For the parabola y2=4x, the focus is S=(1,0).
A point on the parabola is P=(t2,2t). The focal chord through P has slope tan60∘=3:
t2−12t−0=3
2t=3(t2−1)
Solving: t=3, so P=(3,23).
The circle with diameter PS has equation:
(x−1)(x−3)+(y−0)(y−23)=0
x2−4x+3+y2−23y=0
At x=0 (y-axis):
3+y2−23y=0
y2−23y+3=0
y=3
So α=3, and 5α2=5⋅3=15.
