Given below are two statements
Statement I: The N-N single bond is weaker and longer than that of single bond
Statement II : Compounds of group 15 elements in oxidation states readily undergo disproportionation reactions.
In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
Statement I: The N-N single bond is weaker and longer than that of single bond
Statement II : Compounds of group 15 elements in oxidation states readily undergo disproportionation reactions.
In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- (A)Statement I is true but statement II is false
- (B)Both statement I and statement II are false✓ Correct
- (C)Statement I is false but statement II is true
- (D)Both statement I and statement II are true
Answer: (B)
Solution
Nitrogen is small, so the single bond is weaker than through greater lone-pair repulsion, yet it is shorter, not longer; calling it longer makes Statement I false. Ready disproportionation of the state is not a general feature of group 15, since the heavier members arsenic, antimony and bismuth are stabilised in by the inert-pair effect and resist it, so Statement II is false as well. Both statements are false.
