Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.

Assertion A : The Bohr model is applicable to hydrogen and hydrogen-like atoms only.

Reason R : The formulation of Bohr model does not include repulsive force between electrons.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Both and are true but is NOT the correct explanation of .
  2. (B) is false but is true.
  3. (C)Both and are true and is the correct explanation of .✓ Correct
  4. (D) is true but is false.

Answer: (C)

Solution

The Bohr model treats a single electron moving under the nuclear attraction and quantises its orbit; it carries no term for mutual repulsion between electrons. Because of this it succeeds only for one-electron systems — hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions — and breaks down for atoms with more than one electron. The absence of electron–electron repulsion in the formulation is precisely why the model is limited to such atoms, so both statements are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
