The number of relations on the set containing at most 6 elements including , which are reflexive and transitive but not symmetric, is

Answer: 6

Solution

A reflexive relation on must contain , and here also , leaving room for at most two further ordered pairs. To keep the relation from being symmetric, the pair must be excluded. Taking no further pair gives one relation. Adding exactly one pair, only or preserves transitivity, giving two more. Adding two pairs, the transitive possibilities are , and , giving three more. In all there are such relations.
