In the following series of reactions identify the major products A & B respectively.
Bromobenzene
(A)(see structure)A
(B)(see structure)AB✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)AB
(D)(see structure)AB
Answer: (B)
Solution
Bromobenzene is sulfonated by SO3/H2SO4; bromine is an ortho/para director and the bulky −SO3H enters mainly at the para position, so product A is p-bromobenzenesulfonic acid. In the next step Br2/Fe introduces a second bromine: the ring now bears −Br (ortho/para directing) and −SO3H (meta directing), and both effects point to the carbon that is ortho to the existing bromine and meta to the sulfonic acid group. The incoming bromine settles there, so product B is 3,4-dibromobenzenesulfonic acid.
