Net gravitational force at the centre of a square is found to be F1 when four particles having mass M,2M,3M and 4M are placed at the four corners of the square as shown in figure and it is F2 when the positions of 3M and 4M are interchanged. The ratio F2F1 is 5α. The value of α is ______.
(A)2✓ Correct
(B)3
(C)1
(D)25
Answer: (A)
Solution
Each corner is a distance r=2a from the centre, and each mass pulls along its own diagonal. Initially one diagonal carries 4M and 2M, whose fields give a resultant proportional to (4−2)M=2M, while the other diagonal carries 3M and M, giving (3−1)M=2M; as the diagonals are perpendicular, F1=r2GM22+22=22r2GM. Interchanging 3M and 4M pairs 3M with 2M (difference M) and 4M with M (difference 3M), so F2=r2GM12+32=10r2GM. Therefore F2F1=1022=52, and α=2.
