Rods x and y of equal dimensions but of different materials are joined as shown in figure. Temperatures of end points A and F are maintained at 100∘C and 40∘C respectively. Given the thermal conductivity of rod x is three times of that of rod y , the temperature at junction points B and E are (close to) :
(A)89∘C and 73∘C respectively✓ Correct
(B)80∘C and 60∘C respectively
(C)80∘C and 70∘C respectively
(D)60∘C and 45∘C respectively
Answer: (A)
Solution
Equal rods have thermal resistance inversely proportional to conductivity, so with kx=3ky let rod x be R and rod y be 3R. From A to B there is one rod x (R); between B and E two branches run in parallel, x+x=2R and y+y=6R, combining to 8R(2R)(6R)=1.5R; from E to F there is one rod y (3R). The total is R+1.5R+3R=211R, so the heat current is H=11R/2100−40=11R120. Then TB=100−HR=100−11120≈89∘C and TE=40+H(3R)=40+11360≈73∘C.
